Deadspin recently got a hold of an audio recording of Huntingdon College director of golf Matt Mahanic ripping his team a new one after a poor performance at a tournament in Alabama.

Fortunately for us (and unfortunately for 2007 Huntingdon graduate Mahanic) somebody on the bus was recording the whole thing on their phone.  The fun starts around 1:55 in the clip above.  I’m putting the highlights after the break given the NSFW language, but one thing really stood out to me:

Mahanic makes a big deal out his father asking him at the tournament “why the f*** are you recruiting these kids?”.  Recruiting?  In D-III where they can’t offer athletic scholarships?  Maybe somebody can fill me in, but D-III golf seems about like high school golf as far as I can tell.  If you’re a player on that team, why on earth would you put up with somebody (who only happens to be 5 years older than you) chewing you out like that when you’re not even getting a scholarship out of the deal?

That would be like Bob on the company softball team cursing out the rest of the team after a loss.  You’d tell Bob to go pound sand and put his stapler in jello when you got back to the office.

Read the highlights after the break:

“That is fucking horrendous. Horrendous that nobody can shoot fucking par on that golf course. That is the most fucking embarrassed I’ve ever been in my life, having to walk around that fucking scoreboard and look at those other fucking coaches—Fucking 11 teams beat us this week! Eleven fucking teams! Goddamnit!”

“I gotta fucking go up there and watch that bullshit you four call golf! Like watching fucking paint dry! My dad looked and me and said, ‘Why the fuck are you recruiting these kids?’”

“I’m ready to lose my fucking mind. There is no fucking helping you! …Fucking not a big deal, though. It’s not a big deal. Fucking hunky-dory.”

“We fucking don’t deserve shit. Fucking—we haven’t broke 300 all year. Four fucking chances in nice weather, and we haven’t broken 300 yet. Fuck me.”

“I don’t want to hear a fucking word out of anybody until we get back to Kentucky[?]. Put your fucking headphones on, go to sleep, I don’t give a shit. I had to watch you play golf for the last 54 fucking holes. Please do not let me hear your fucking voice right now.”

bethany college golf team nude photo

I’ve just found Phil’s next screensaver.  Bethany College, a small Lutheran school in Kansas, has suspended it’s entire 15-man golf team after the guys posed for a nude photo.  The only visible equipment was golfing related, but apparently the team’s coach didn’t find the photo amusing and brought the hammer down on his own team.

Team captain Jack Hiscock (yes that’s really his name) is appealing the suspension to the college president. [Update on the suspension here]

Here’s a picture of Sophie Horn to make up for the picture above:

Augusta State Golf team

Augusta State became the 2nd school in 26 years to repeat as NCAA Men’s Div I golf champions yesterday.  They defeated Georgia who has qualified for match play every year since winning it all in 2005.

Russell Henley (who recently won on the Nationwide Tour) won his match for Georgia, but it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs to take down the defending champion Janguars.

In order to play in the final round, Augusta State had to get by Oklahoma State on Saturday.  OSU was a favorite heading into the competition, having both Peter Uihlein on their team as well as home course advantage.

However, Augusta State showed that their win last year was no fluke and took down Oklahoma State among a sea of orange, setting up the showdown with perennial powerhouse Georgia on Sunday.

Unfortunately my Aggies missed out on match play by 1 shot, finishing 9th.  However, Cameron Peck, definitely did his part to represent Texas A&M in the individual competition, finishing T3 with Uihlein among others.

Aggie Golf

My Alma mater, the Texas A&M men’s golf team is putting the final touches on their preparations for next week’s NCAA championship at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, OK.  The 2009 national champion Aggies will be making their 4th consecutive championship appearance.

The championship begins on Tuesday with 54 holes (over 3 days) of stroke play, with the top 8 teams advancing to match play over the weekend.  By Sunday, we will have a new national champion.

The Aggies definitely have championship aspirations according to coach J.T. Higgins:

Everything we do is in preparation for the national championship. We’re trying to get something out of every tournament. Sometimes, if the field’s not as strong, maybe it’s confidence. Or maybe it’s getting used to making lots of birdies and feeling good about your score going low. But most of the time we’re trying to play tough golf courses against really tough fields of teams because we know that’s what we’re going to see in the postseason. You can’t be in awe when you get there. You can’t be scared when you get there. You just have to be comfortable, and I think we’re really comfortable in these situations.

Everyone wants to experience ’09 over again. You sure hope that’s not a once-in-a-lifetime deal, and I think we’re good enough to have that happen again. Last year we’ve used as a motivator all season, every time we start to slip up. Every time we give shots away, it’s easy to remind them that, hey, we came up three shots short last year. We can’t afford to make those kinds of mistakes. It speaks to just how precious every shot is and how focused you have to stay the whole time.

The Texas A&M women’s golf team just wrapped up a 7th place finish at the national championship held at their home course, Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, TX.

Hopefully the men will be able to likewise finish strong next week and hopefully even repeat their 2009 success.

Brandon Weedon announced yesterday on Twitter that he would be joining the OSU golf team as a walk-on athlete.  Why is that news?  Well, in case you didn’t know, Weeden is a former professional baseball player (drafted by the Yankees out of high school) and the current quarterback for OSU’s football team.

I’m guessing that he will be the most athletic guy that has ever played golf at OSU.   Actually, he might be the most athletic guy that’s ever played college golf anywhere.

Last week Golfweek ranked the top 30 college courses in the country.  Yale came in on top, which was well received over at Weiunderpar.  North Carolina was well-represented with Duke sliding into the #10 spot, and NC State’s Lonnie Poole and UNC Finley courses coming in at #22 and #24 respectively.

Honestly the #10 ranking for Duke surprised me.  It’s a very nice course, but I personally find both Finley and Lonnie Poole to be more fun to play.  In my opinion, Lonnie Poole is currently the best college course in the Raleigh-Durham areawith Finley a close 2nd.  I might even go so far as to say that I think Lonnie Poole is actually the best overall course in the area until you get down to Pinehurst.  I have to wonder if “intangibles” such as the overall ambiance of the facility beyond the course itself came into play.

Duke quite honestly feels like a high end private club or resort course.  Since it’s also the home to the Washington Duke Inn, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.  Finley, while being an excellent course, does have a bit of a “muni vibe” to it with the loudspeakers they use to call groups to the first tee.  The condition of the course and practice facilities are excellent though.  And Lonnie Poole, while being the newest and most modern of the collegiate courses in the area, still doesn’t have a permanent clubhouse.  The double-wides are nice, but they’re still double-wides.  That said, if you have $2.5 million, they’ll let you name the new clubhouse you just bought.  I think $2k or so will get you a bench.

The other thing that surprised the heck out of me was the fact that the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy came in at #20 and #26.  I had no idea they had such nice golf courses.  I have to wonder though if it’s an appropriate use of tax-payer dollars at our service academies.
