Arnold Palmer

hard arnold palmer

You will now be hearing that phrase at golf courses around the country.  Arizona tea is releasing a “hard” version of their classic Arnold Palmer drink (1/2 lemonade and 1/2 iced tea).  It will come in 12 oz. six-packs, 24 oz. cans and 32 oz. jugs, and will contain 5% alcohol by volume.  My only question is why no 40?

I may have to go pick up a few… strictly for research purposes of course :-)

Casey Martin: 10 years later

Casey Martin Outside the Lines

Outside the Lines has a great story on Casey Martin and his 4-year legal battle with the PGA Tour that ended in 2001. Martin, who suffers from a rare and painful leg disability, fought the PGA Tour for the right to use a golf cart in competition. He ultimately took his case all the way to the Supreme Court where he emerged victorious.

Riding in a cart didn’t turn out to be the advantage than many though it would be:

Maybe on a 120-degree day or on a really hilly course it helped to ride,” Martin said. “But I certainly wish I could’ve walked. The rhythm of the game at a competitive level is a walking rhythm, not a riding rhythm.”

After struggling to remain competitive on the golf course, Martin retired from professional golf five years ago.  He’s now the head coach for the University of Oregon’s golf team, which he’s turned into a national powerhouse.

Arnold Palmer in Cockpit

[Thanks to Phil for sending this my way]

Lots of people are probably aware that Arnold Palmer was one of the first athletes to own a private plane.  But I don’t think many people realized (myself included) that he has been an avid pilot for the last 45 years.

Since 1965, he’s clocked in more than 20k hours in the cockpit, which includes setting a world record in 1976 by flying a Learjet 36 around the world in 57 hours, 25 minutes and 42 seconds.  That record still stands today.

The Top 50 Earners in 2010

by Derek on December 30, 2010

in International Golf,PGA Tour

Surprise Surprise, even without a win for the first time in his career, Tiger still tops the list of top earners in golf in 2010.  It’s not all roses however.  Even though he earned an estimated $74.2m this year, it was his lowest earnings total over the past decade, and represented a $48m drop from 2009.  Between the divorce settlement, rumored payoffs and the lost income, Tiger was engaged in some very expensive extra-curricular activities.
