Peter Uihlein can play some damn golf

Peter Uihlein can flat out play some golf.  If his victory at the 2010 US Amateur wasn’t enough confirmation for you, just check out this eagle (his 2nd in 3 holes) on the 7th hole at Copperhead.  Uihlein finished the day at 3-under in a tie for 39th, 6 shots off the lead.

Uihlein is a Sophomore at Oklahoma State (Rickie Fowler’s alma mater).  He’s stated that he has no intention of leaving early and turning pro however:

Yeah, I’m going to be there for four years. I’m going to finish up. I love it in Stillwater. Surprising, but I do love it out there. I love all of the people and I love the school.

Wow, he wants to stay in Stillwater, eating pizza in a dorm room instead of playing on Tour?

I guess Uihlein seems to be doing the smart thing, taking his time refining his game and getting an education.  Obviously amateur success doesn’t always translate to the pro ranks, so having a back up plan is a good idea.  But I don’t think that anybody really doubts Uihlein will be a force to be reckoned with on tour within a few years.

We’ll see how Uilhein handles the rest of the weekend.  It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he finishes inside the top 20.  And I can’t wait to see how he does next month at the Masters, where he’s received an exemption for his US Amateur victory.

He is a talent. Hits the ball a mile and has a short game to go with it. Rookies don’t have a good record around Augusta, so even if he does poorly there I still think he’ll be a star on tour relatively soon.
