Professional golfers sometimes find it too easy to actually use their clubs on the golf course (see tin cup/shovel) so they look for unique and interesting challenges during practice rounds. In this case, Paul Casey decided to show off his canon arm by betting Lucas Glover that he could throw a ball on the green from 120ish yards. That is one heck of a toss. Check out the video after the jump.
Lucas Glover
It’s that time of year again. The best players in the world are getting in last minute practice for the start of the US Open at Congressional on Thursday.
The last 2 US Opens have produced champions who weren’t picked by many pundits to win. There are probably 50 players with a reasonable chance this week. So instead of picking who I think it most likely to win, I’m picking 5 “under-the-radar” players that I think could win this week.
Lucas Glover defeated Jonathan Byrd in a playoff Sunday at Quail Hollow to capture the Wachovia Bank championship.
Glover hadn’t won (or hardly contended) on Tour since his US Open win in 2009. There were rumors that he had considered walking away from the game at one point.
He was also still sporting the beard that he has been growing since last fall [and what a magnificent beard it is]. So not only was this a figurative return from the wild, it also looked like a literal return as well.
The best putter on Tour is John Merrick. No you haven’t seen his name on top of many leaderboards and he only has one top 25 finish this year. In fact, his best ever finish was a 2nd place in 2009. But he’s the best putter so far this year on Tour.
You might say “He’s only 57th in putts per round.” True, but he’s leading the PGA Tour’s new putting statistic, “Strokes Gained – Putting“.
